Earth Machine Music - Kimmo Pohjonen
A unique music event featuring one of Europe’s most inventive and critically acclaimed artists collaborating with agricultural machinery.
Finnish composer Kimmo Pohjonen has been dubbed the ‘Hendrix of the accordion’. Pohjonen’s roots go back thirty years in all forms of accordion music including folk, dance, classical, rock, experimental, theatre music and more; his mission, using surround sound, live loops and digital effects, is to expand the range, scope and sound of his instrument to levels never before seen or heard.
In March 2008 Kimmo worked with farming folk and their machinery across just four UK locations. In Devon this varied from huge combine harvesters at a local agricultural machinery dealership, to corn silos at an animal feed business, to shire horses at Westcott Barton, a farm listed in the Domesday Book. Using this material, Kimmo’s performance on May 15th will feature new music composed in response to the various machines and farm sounds, and local people ‘playing’ the machinery alongside him at Westcott Barton.
